From 1981 forward all bottles in the USA started carrying metric (ml, liter, etc.) statements.

Find ads that depict your bottle and you’ll know roughly when it’s from.

I probably receive more questions about bottles than any other single item, simply because they are what most people find.

Often someone will dig up a contour or "hobble skirt" bottle from the 1920s and immediately assume they've struck gold.

Does your dusty bottle of whskey have a UPC on the back?

They fully came into fashion around 1985, but began popping up in the late 70s and early 80s.

Some states also used their own tax stamps (top left of the bottle above) which can give clues like the State Treasurer’s name, tax rate, State Secretary’s signature, etc. It’s a Manufacturer’s strip designed to reproduce the general look of a tax strip.
